How to Create the First Guideline

Plan and place the initial skin-fade guideline without losing control of height, shape or symmetry.

Plan before cutting

The first guideline establishes the fade’s lowest boundary and strongly influences its final height. Decide where the fade should sit before touching the hair, then account for head shape, temples, occipital bone and growth pattern.

Place a controlled line

Work in short sections and keep the guideline visible. Avoid allowing it to rise unintentionally as you move around the head. The line may follow a slight drop toward the back when that better supports the intended shape.

Compare both sides

Pause at the front and back to compare height. Use fixed anatomical reference points rather than judging symmetry only from a very close angle. Correcting the plan early is easier than compensating after multiple bands have been added.

Preserve working space

Do not stack guidelines too tightly. Each transition needs enough vertical space to be blended without forcing the fade higher. The available area should be planned as a whole before the next guideline is introduced.
